The Club’s members were always keen to travel for a surf. Before cars there were rickshaws behind pushbikes. Then as the older guys started to get cars, surfing safaris boomed. Our first inter club contest outside Newcastle was surfed at Green Knob, now known as Saltwater, near Taree. It was held on 11th July, 1965, the Club barely 12 months old. Merewether defeated Taree and Port Macquarie. The photo shows Bob Bordiss’ Bedford van surrounded by very interested and seemingly intense spectators.
