The idea of forming a club was taken up and an initial small meeting held in early 1964 at Robbie Wood’s. It was decided to pursue the idea formally and a founding meeting was held on 27 June 1964 in the front yard of Bob Gunter’s house in Frederick Street, now part of Jefferson Park. The meeting of between 20 and 30 surfers from the beach agreed to formalize the club and named it Merewether Surfboard Club. The first competition was held on Sunday 19 July, 1964, which is recorded as the first club competition in Newcastle. The newspapers reported an initial membership of 60.
